#22: Dream big
Timmy's Oscar campaign is undeniable and intriguing
I’ve only got a couple more posts after this, so I debated whether I included the EsDeeKid/Chalamet collaboration at the end of something else. But this is the reason I don’t write Critmases too far in advance: something remarkable might just happen and this aspect of the Marty Supreme Oscar/box office campaign was that very thing.
There have been rumours that Scouse rapper EsDeeKid was Timothée Chalamet, which the actor was simply saying “All will be revealed” when asked about it on interviews on BBC News and Radio 1. And then, a week after Chalamet announced the Marty Supreme London pop-up using The Streets’ song ‘Turn the Page’ (bangerrr, incidentally and we had been talking about it being annoying Mike Skinner had opted to do the wrong album for his tour next year: his debut Original Pirate Material is the man, the myth and the legend, and deserves commemorating), the pair drop a remix.
I love that EsDeeKid is wearing a McQueen skull scarf: it takes me back to the Topshop and H&M ripoffs of my teens when emo and scene-kid styles were available on the high street. (So many fingerless gloves!)
But…let’s talk about the bars:
Timmy wants is trying to get to a hundred million while ‘his girl’s got a billion: what a wonderful feeling.’ How’s Club Chalamet feeling about the Kylie Jenner shout out?
Local shoutouts: from ‘model bitches in Peckham’ to the frankly ingenious line about ‘riding rentals in Wrexham’ — Ryan Reynolds…Wrexham? Incidentally, the celeb owners of Wrexham AFC have just sold a stake of the club to private equity. Go figure.
‘I’m having fun, just sexting//My dick is young and restless’ — in order to have his cake and eat it as an eligible, bankable movie star under 30, he throws back to the start of his fame in 2017 so he can reference the groupies and the accolades that make his like ‘like an opera’ to counteract referencing his relationship up top.
‘Live on Arakis and Mordor’: Arakis of Dune. To which I can simply only say…Lisan al-Gaib!
For Timmy-T’s next trick, I’d encourage him to work with a female director as he hasn’t done that since Greta Gerwig’s Little Women back in 2019. Dream big!
On this day…
2020: If you can believe it, it’s only been five years of Vittles.
2021: And to think I felt this before the ‘capacious bag’ line on Succession
2022: Particularly proud of the image I chose to illustrate this one, so here it is in preview
2023: On boring influencers
2024: The Secret Garden at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and the less successful Blitz by Steve McQueen.
